Karius Clinical Investigator Awards for Applied Pediatric Infectious Disease Genomics


Karius is offering awards for talented researchers using next-generation sequencing to study human pathogens. One grant of up to $50,000 will be awarded to a research institution for a novel application of the Karius cell-free DNA test for infectious diseases.

Applications must include a detailed proposal for clinical research and budget for how the award will be used. In addition to the funding, the company will cover the cost of sequencing a limited number of specimens for this program. The purpose of these grants is to accelerate research focused on infectious disease diagnostics and to positively impact pediatric health. 

Winners will be announced in early March 2019. The closing date for applications is December 21, 2018.

Award Application Requirements

In order to apply for the Karius Clinical Investigator Awards for Applied Pediatric Infectious Disease Genomics, please complete the following steps:

1. Enter your information into the application form below and submit it. This will alert our Grants Committee to expect your full application.

2. Prepare your full application, which must consist of the following elements:

  • A personal statement, including why you are applying for this award and how it would help further your research
  • A brief research proposal (no more than three pages) that includes a hypothesis, a list of aims, the significance of your research to clinical or public health issues, any relevant background information (including any other sources of funding you have received for this proposal), any preliminary data, the proposed study design, and a list of references
  • Detailed research protocol, timeline, and budget for how the $50,000 will be spent (grant funds may only be used for direct expenses of the research and not capital or operating expenses)
  • Your NIH Biosketch
  • Reference letters from two medical/scientific professionals familiar with your work

Terms and Conditions

The Karius Clinical Investigator Awards for Applied Pediatric Infectious Disease Genomics are open to investigators in the United States at every level of training, including residents, fellows, and post-docs, however grants shall only be awarded to the investigator’s institution. Grants may not be made to an individual investigator or individual group practices. All grant funds must be used exclusively for research and research equipment and not for overhead, capital expenditures, administrative costs or other peripheral or indirect costs. Karius may in its discretion grant an award of less than $50,000 based on the budget submitted. Projects must be focused on pediatric applications and completed within one year from the date the grant funding is awarded. Karius will cover the cost of sequencing and providing standard Karius results for no more than 100 plasma specimens. Investigators will be required to enter into a grant letter of agreement with Karius and provide a signed Form W-9 for the institution through which you are applying as conditions of receiving the award. Submission of an application for a Karius Clinical Investigator Award shall constitute acceptance of all of these terms and conditions. Applications received after the submission deadline will not be considered. The award of any grant shall be made by Karius in its sole discretion. The decision made by Karius shall be final.
